Does deleting an AI chat delete its memory?
Not necessarily. Deleting a conversation may be separate from deleting saved memory, activity history, uploaded files, connected-app access, or your provider account. Check the provider’s current product instructions for each control and what remains after a request.
“Delete” can describe different things. A conversation disappearing from the chat list does not, by itself, tell you whether a product has another memory feature or how long backend records are retained. The provider’s policy and product settings describe their current rules; they do not show whether your specific request has completed.
Five controls that may be separate
Chat or conversation history
Look for the product’s instructions to remove a conversation and check whether it explains when removal takes effect and what exceptions apply.
Saved memory or personalization
Find the feature that manages remembered facts or preferences. Review saved items and use the product’s own forget, reset, or memory-deletion control when available.
Activity and product history
Some services provide activity pages or data controls apart from an individual chat. Check the service’s help center for the account and product you use.
Connected app access
Deleting a chat does not necessarily revoke a connection to email, files, or another app. Remove the connection in the assistant and review the connected service’s access settings.
Account deletion and retained records
Account deletion is broader than deleting one chat, and provider notices may describe processing time, legal obligations, backups, or security retention. Read those details before you submit a request and save its confirmation if offered.
How can I check that deletion worked?
Follow the provider’s current steps, look for an on-screen confirmation or request status, and review the separate memory and connection controls afterward. If the provider explains a waiting period or exceptions, use those details to understand what the confirmation means.
