What can an AI agent access?
An AI agent can access information and take actions that its product, account settings, and granted permissions allow. Check the live connection screen for the exact service, data scope, and actions. A marketing description or privacy policy cannot show which permissions are enabled in your account.
Some assistants only respond to the text you send. Others can use connected apps, files, device features, saved preferences, or tools that act on your behalf. Permission names vary by product, so read the specific screen shown during setup.
Four kinds of access to check
Information you provide
Prompts, uploaded files, images, voice, and feedback are information you deliberately submit. Before sharing, check whether the material includes personal details about you or someone else and whether the current task needs all of it.
Connected accounts and services
An integration may let an assistant search, read, or update information in another service. Confirm the service name, requested scope, account, and whether access stays active. If an organization manages the account, its administrator may control some settings.
Memory and activity
Saved preferences, conversation history, activity records, and files are not necessarily the same store. Find the controls for each feature rather than assuming one “history” switch covers everything.
Actions and tools
Some agents can send messages, create calendar items, or make changes through tools. Read the confirmation carefully: check the destination, content, amount, or record being changed. A general approval does not tell you whether a specific future action will ask again.
How to review a permission screen
- Read the name of each service and account being connected.
- Look for verbs: view, search, read, create, edit, send, or delete.
- Check whether access is limited to selected data or covers a wider account.
- Find how to revoke access in both the assistant and the connected service.
- After setup, confirm the connection appears in the account’s current settings.
Can an AI agent access everything on my phone?
That cannot be answered from the term “AI agent” alone. Access depends on the app, operating system permissions, account connections, and the feature being used. Review the device’s current permission settings and the in-product connection screen for the specific assistant.
Before approving an action
Ask: what will be sent or changed, who receives it, which account will be used, and can I review the exact action first? For high-impact steps, do not rely on a vague summary. Inspect the specific request and approve only if it matches what you intended.
For a broader review, use the five-step AI agent privacy checklist. For separate memory and deletion controls, see what happens when you delete an AI chat.
